The Connect Programme: Joining the Dots in Dietetics

by Fresenius Kabi UK with support from Page & Page and Partners

Summary of work

When Fresenius Kabi identified that many secondary care dietitians were unconfident discussing the appropriateness of prescribing Parenteral Nutrition (PN) with colleagues, and that a number of these were unconfident referring patients to senior colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) or Nutrition Support Team (NST), a solution was needed.
PN is a complex, lifesaving and life-sustaining therapy that supports patients across hospital and community settings. Low confidence levels lead to delays in patients receiving the vital therapy they need.
The Connect Programme is a non-promotional, NCFE-accredited online educational event, run over six weeks, designed to enable lead dietitians working in UK acute settings to support members of their team and help them grow in confidence in their role.
The primary aim of the Connect Programme is to empower clinicians to communicate more effectively and more confidently with colleagues, for better patient outcomes.
The Connect Programme offers a unique educational opportunity for lead clinicians, empowering them through coaching skills to best share their knowledge and skills with their team so that they feel more confident in working with PN and recommending it to MDTs/NSTs. The success of the programme means that it has expanded to support other clinical roles working with PN.
