Hobby Horses and Poker Chips: Reimagining the MSL Training Experience

by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation with support from Caudex, an IPG Health Company

Summary of work

Hematology medical science liaisons (MSLs) must build relationships with health care professionals (HCPs) and confidently verbalize scientific information. However, verbalizing scientific information is challenging when MSLs are faced with a broad product portfolio and a need to constantly pivot between multiple disease states and compounds in a single conversation with an HCP. To address this need, we partnered with our clients to reimagine traditional verbalization training for MSLs and deliver two live, innovative workshops, referred to herein as Hemeolympics and Hemecasino. In the Hemeolympics, we enhanced storytelling skills and data fluency through a pentathlon of mentally and physically stimulating activities. In Hemecasino, we leveraged interactions with experienced medical directors to maximize strategic understanding through a trio of casino games. All workshop activities were designed to strengthen confidence, clarity, and consistency of interactions with HCPs, with 100% of MSLs reporting plans to apply learnings during upcoming engagements. Immediate performance evaluation provided actionable insights to inform training needs.By elevating communication skills and fostering cross-functional collaboration, MSLs were equipped to engage in more meaningful conversations, contributing to better-informed treatment decisions and improved patient outcomes. These workshops exemplify a collaborative, patient-focused approach to maximize the benefits of treatment through innovation in medical education.
