Novartis Patient Support Program – Hybrid Personalised Support at Patients’ Fingertips
Summary of work
Managing the burden of multiple sclerosis (MS) for patients is challenging. Patients face perceptual and practical barriers to optimal treatment and self-management, so services that understand and address these complex needs are imperative.
An evidence-based behavioural design approach was applied to develop a Novartis patient support programme (PSP) aimed at meeting patients’ real needs. This PSP has been created and funded by Novartis.
The PSP was released in 2 phases: the first was a nurse service to provide patient education and brief behavioural interventions. In January 2023 (and the focus of this award), a complementary patient app launched to provide an integrated channel to connect patients to nurses, self-management tools, and tailored content to address individual barriers.
To date, a large cohort of patients have been supported, across many NHS sites. The patient and healthcare surveys are suggesting a strong appreciation for the value of the PSP, and the uptake and popularity of the app has exceeded Novartis expectations.

Judges’ comments
“Novartis and IQVIA have created an excellent patient support programme with robust objectives and a thorough stepwise approach. The judges thought the blend of data and behavioural science worked well and noted that it was good to see the content mapping process that led to features included within the programme. There were clear measures of success and the qualitative feedback was strong.”
