How to Involve and Engage Patients in Digital Health Tech Innovation – An Evidence Based Guide

By Boehringer Ingelheim UK & Ireland
With support from: University of Plymouth, The AHSN Network, and ORCHA

Summary of work

The NHS long term plan aims to increase patient empowerment and usage of Digital Health Technologies (DHTs) for better health. However, research shows that innovators have a limited understanding of how to ensure digital health works for all patients. To address this, Boehringer Ingelheim UK & Ireland collaborated with the University of Plymouth and the AHSN Network to set standards to ensure patients are at the centre of digital transformation.

Published in June 2022, “How to involve and engage patients in digital health tech innovation – An Evidence Based Guide” combined the results of a systematic literature review, advisory panels and multi-stakeholder input to produce four clear principles around patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE). Supported by NHS England & Improvement, the resource responds to the accelerating use and supply of digital technology for health and social care. It includes recommendations around critical issues such as data privacy, intellectual property, inclusivity, reimbursement, usability, and the recruitment of patients.
