Prostate Cancer Research Platform : A patient driven initiative to unleash the potential of prostate cancer data

By Prostate Cancer Research
With support from IQVIA

Summary of work

Prostate cancer is a complex and complicated disease. Despite the therapeutic improvements of the past decade, in the UK one man still dies of prostate cancer every 45 minutes, and 250,000 die each year worldwide (1). Access to clinical trials in the UK is challenging and the health inequalities are evident regarding inclusion of this diverse patient group in research, which directly affects patient care and outcomes (2). Prostate cancer disproportionately affects black men (60% of cases in men 65 and older) (3) and those of lower educational and socioeconomic status (2).

Prostate Cancer Research (PCR) is a research and patient information charity focused on delivering breakthrough medicines and treatments for prostate cancer. PCR have taken a patient informed and focused approach to developing a disease registry that links clinical data with patient outcomes data, representing the voice of all patients, and aims to reduce health inequalities and improve access to clinical trials, new medicines and as a result improved outcomes.

This registry will be a collaborative platform capturing all aspects of the patient’s treatment journey, including both medical and quality of life data, making this available to patients, their clinicians and the wider community to make informed decisions.

Judges’ comments

Prostate Cancer Research and IQVIA have created an important programme addressing a clear unmet need. The insights were excellent and the collaboration with industry impressive. The judges could see that the programme succeeded in changing perceptions of both patients and HCPs, and thought the concept could easily be translated to other disease areas.
