LungX Health Bot

by MSD with support from Gesundheit

Summary of work

LungX is a public health bot launched by MSD Sweden to raise awareness and support early detection of lung diseases, particularly lung cancer. It helps users identify potential symptoms and encourages seeking medical care but is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace professional advice.

Reviewed by a Chief Physician in Oncology, the bot asks brief, guideline-based questions and suggests whether users should consult a healthcare professional. After completing the assessment, users receive a personalized two-page symptom report to support discussions with their doctor. The bot also links to Sweden’s 1177 health portal to help find healthcare providers. In 2024, as part of a pilot project, users, if they wished, could book a video consultation with a doctor via a digital healthcare provider. LungX is available in Swedish, English, and Arabic.

Since launch, LungX has exceeded expectations, averaging nearly 10,000 completed sessions per month in 2024. Demographic data shows it effectively reached those most at risk for lung cancer. The bot reflects MSD’s commitment to supporting patients beyond medicine by promoting awareness and timely action. It has now been implemented in 22 additional markets as a scalable digital health solution with real-world impact.
