Project RISE (Reduction in Shortrunner Exercise)

Celgene

Summary of work

Outstanding engagement with myeloma nurses and physicians, guided by robust insights into the issue of early discontinuation of lenalidomide, enabled a significant shift in the management approach to relapsed refractory multiple myeloma.

Various streams of quantitative data and patient chart market research data were innovatively combined to give an impressively detailed overview of the issues that drive early discontinuation. From this platform, and with the input and guidance of some of the foremost experts in the treatment of myeloma, an expert-endorsed programme that targeted the educational needs of UK myeloma physicians and nurses was created. Project RISE has enabled patients to stay on life-saving treatment for longer and with fewer adverse effects resulting in vastly improved survival and quality of life.

Judges’ comments

This was an exceptional example of exploring a business issue by gathering and evaluating data, then building on that insight with customer feedback and suggestions. This approach enabled the team to develop workable solutions, which had a real impact on patient adherence and therefore, potentially, survival time.
