Transforming Northeast London Nail Salons into Gynae Health Education hubs

by Eve Appeal and North-East London Cancer Alliance with support from JPA Health

Summary of work

This ovarian cancer awareness campaign was delivered in alignment with NHS priorities to support earlier diagnosis among women most at risk in North East London. The campaign combined digital promotion, trusted community voices, and in-person events to create an authentic, culturally relevant approach that reached women across multiple touchpoints.Digital activity formed the backbone, with targeted Meta advertising, grassroots promotion in Facebook groups, and partnerships with local influencers extending visibility beyond traditional health channels. This strategy achieved a reach of more than 116,000 and drove over 3,000 visits to the website, triple the original target. To ensure messages were credible, three local ambassadors acted as trusted advocates, bridging the gap between NHS institutions and community audiences.In-person engagement was equally vital. Nail salons were transformed into welcoming hubs where women accessed free manicures alongside stigma-free conversations about ovarian cancer symptoms. Both events reached full capacity, surpassing attendance targets. The campaign generated strong digital engagement, community pride, and evidence of behaviour change, with participants reporting greater awareness and intent to seek medical advice. Early NHS data suggest a rise in diagnoses linked to the campaign, underscoring its real-world impact and national potential.

Judges’ comments

This entry from the Eve Appeal, North East London Cancer Alliance and JPA Health had a great focus on a particularly target patient population. It brought healthcare to people who wouldn’t normally access it it from a gynaecological perspective. It demonstrated a clear link in positive uptake of ovarian cancer awareness and diagnosis in the Northeast London area. A great initiative!
