Haleon’s Community Pharmacy Pain Consultations Programme
Summary of work
Haleon’s Centre for Human Sciences (CHS) launched the Community Pharmacy Pain Consultations Programme to significantly enhance the capabilities of community pharmacists, key healthcare professionals (HCPs), in pain management.Understanding the HCP Landscape: Recognising that effective HCP engagement and education are crucial for improved patient outcomes, CHS, in partnership with experts, conducted deep research into pharmacist-patient interactions. This revealed unmet needs in HCP consultation skills and patient perception of pharmacists.Behavioural Science in Action: This understanding led to the development and pilot of two complementary, behavioural science-backed interventions: in-store cues to reframe the pharmacist’s role and comprehensive pharmacist training.Driving Clinical Practice Change: The programme, which provides a tangible and proven blueprint for scalable HCP training, plus in-store materials for patients, significantly improved pharmacists’ confidence and ability to provide holistic care, leading to more patients receiving tailored recommendations and improved patient satisfaction with pharmacist understanding. By empowering pharmacists with enhanced knowledge and tools, Haleon is driving a change in clinical practice, fostering higher quality HCP experiences, and ultimately leading to improved real-world patient healthcare outcomes while achieving key business objectives.
