COPD Spotlight: Transforming COPD Care Where It’s Needed Most
Summary of work
COPD is a relentless, debilitating condition that steadily erodes quality of life. It heavily impacts over 3 million people in the UK—yet two-thirds more remain undiagnosed. With ~130,000 hospital admissions annually, COPD places immense strain on the NHS and the patients and families affected, which underscores the urgent need for targeted solutions.SPOTLIGHT, a multidimensional initiative designed to meet this challenge where it matters most, brings vital awareness to communities most affected by COPD while empowering healthcare professionals, informing clinical practice and supporting patient education. At its core is the COPD SPOTLIGHT Medical Education Roadshow—an expert-led programme delivered in six UK cities with high COPD. Tailored to local needs, SPOTLIGHT combines clinical insights with interactive learning to drive real-world improvements in care. Asthma + Lung UK added powerful patient advocacy insights, grounding the programme in lived experience.SPOTLIGHT also extended its reach into the community. A branded bus acted as a mobile billboard, raising public awareness, while the “Let’s Dance” initiative offered an uplifting, movement-based education tool to support self-management. Feedback generated help inform a White-Paper platform to advocate for policy change. Together, these elements created a ripple effect—boosting HCP confidence, engaging patients, and reshaping COPD care.
