Summary of work
Penta is one of the most prominent scientific organizations dedicated to children’s health. It is an alliance of people united by a common purpose: to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infection in children. Penta has been working in paediatric HIV for over 30 years. Over the last 6 years, Penta has been developing its Patient and Public Involvement work, with a specific focus on engaging children and young people living with HIV in meaningful ways in its research.
There are several global conferences throughout the year where the latest research is presented, and the findings inform the medication and care received by children and young people living with HIV. Currently, these findings, and the debate generated, are not shared with children and young people – the group most impacted by the results. Due to the cost of attending these events, and the complexity of the discussion, obtaining and sharing access to these findings is almost impossible.
The Young Reporters project was designed by Penta in collaboration with 90TEN to address this gap by training a cohort of young people living with HIV on the social media and messaging skills required to communicate the science from medical congresses to their communities.
Judges’ comments
Penta and 90TEN put tofether a different approach to a clear, unmet need. The situational analysis to barriers was nice and clear and the three young journalists got enormous engagement. They had a reasonable extrapolation of patient experiences in terms of getting information. The judges look forward to seeing this project develop.
