Palmoplantar Pustulosis Augmented Reality Tool
Summary of work
A novel, engaging, educational experience in palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) was developed for healthcare professionals (HCPs) visiting the Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) exhibition booth at EADV 2018, Paris, France (global dermatology congress). The collaboration between agency, HCP experts and industry led to the development of the world’s first augmented reality simulation of a rare skin disease – showing HCPs the reality of PPP on their very own hand.
By raising awareness of this extremely rare disease, and expanding upon the three key components of this condition, HCPs were able to recognise and distinguish PPP from psoriasis by visualising the condition on their own palm. This was an impactful and completely unique combination of multiple novel technologies.
The results exceeded outcomes, with 75% of participants responding that they would now be able to recognise the rare condition. The booth raised awareness and education around this rare disease, showcased BI in the dermatology field and ultimately provided an educational experience that would not have had the impact or results if implemented in any other way, demonstrating the effectiveness in the innovation of the unique combination of technologies.
Judges’ comments
OPEN Health and Boehringer Ingelheim have created a really cool, neat and innovative educational tool for HCPs. It was a strong submission for differential diagnosis.
