MS in the 21st Century: Bringing Patients' Needs to the Centre of Multiple Sclerosis Care
Summary of work
The MS in the 21st Century (MS21) initiative has successfully shifted the focus from healthcare professional (HCP)-driven outcomes towards the actual needs of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). MS21 brings together PwMS and HCPs on an equal footing to uncover unmet needs in MS care.
The MS21 advisors drive a process that gathers data and insights from surveys, alongside literature reviews and personal experiences, to identify unmet needs. In-depth analysis and discussions through advisory boards provides a crucial dialogue between patients and HCPs that enables both parties to work collaboratively to develop pragmatic solutions that benefit all.
MS21 has successfully produced and disseminated a range of materials that educate patients on their condition, enabling them to identify and discuss priorities and concerns openly with their HCP during consultations. For example, the ‘myMS commitments’ tool is a mutual agreement between the patient and their HCP to share knowledge and support shared decision making. Similarly, ‘myMS roadmap’ helps PwMS and their families and carers to understand the language used in MS care, from diagnosis through to starting treatment and beyond.
By focusing on education for both PwMS and HCPs, MS21 is a model that improves care right across MS.

This entry from Lumanity and Merck KGaA was well articulated with a distinctive voice. The insight, strategy and execution were all excellent, which resulted in the telling of an impactful story. The judges really got a sense of the durability of this campaign and could see that the entrants realised that the intervention they made was going to have to last.
