EXcellence in Ophthalmology Vision Award (XOVA) 2010

Novartis Pharma AG in association with Alpha-Plus Medical Communications (Fishawack Group)

Summary of work

In 2010, Novartis combined its leadership in ophthalmology and established Corporate Citizenship policy to develop the EXcellence in Ophthalmology Vision Award (XOVA) programme. The programme, aimed to provide at least two grants for non-profit educational or innovative initiatives, was designed to have a clear and positive impact on improving the quality of ophthalmic care.

With 121 submissions from 37 countries, the number of entries significantly outstripped the target of 50. Three winners, chosen by an expert faculty, were recognised at the CME-accredited Age-related Macular Degeneration congress in Switzerland in October 2010. The winning projects came from Timor Leste, East Africa and India.

Judges’ comments

“This programme allowed people to do different things. The solution fitted the specific issue and is not homogenised in any way. It’s a truly sustainable programme.”
